JOSHUA TREE  - LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AT ITS BEST

DECEMBER 1-4, 2017

In this photograph workshop you'll immerse yourself in the Mojave desert wonderland called Joshua Tree National Park. It is filled with giant boulders that form all sorts of shapes and patterns which opens one's imagination to endless photographic possibilities. The boulders, arroyos and canyons all interact to form a landscape of beauty and mystery. Combined with the freaky Joshua Tree forests and Ocotillo gardens, Joshua Tree National Park is truly a sensual landscape.

What is a sensual landscape? It is about finding shape and form within the stones - sometimes human form - created by light, shadow and personal vision. Composition will be our focus.

How does a photographer learn to see pictures? Find what fascinates you and you will discover new ways of seeing. I tell my students to not only see the big scene or landscape, but look to find small landscapes at one’s feet. Look to find texture created from light, and shadows that create form. Learn to use the negative space in a scene as your center of interest.

We will concentrate on our black and white photography keeping some of the classics in mind including Minor White, Edward and Bret Weston and Ansel Adams. We will shoot both early and late and spend mid day time learning how to process and get the most from your images into black and white. We will also do some night moonscapes under the night sky.

Some of the topics we will cover include:

-Using light and shadow to create form.

-Texture and shape to make a composition.

-Black & White in two dimensions.

-Abstractions.

-Contrasting subject matter.

-Color or Black & White?

Some of the places we will shoot include:

  1. Keys View

  2. Hidden Valley

  3. Skull Rock

  4. Jumbo Rocks

  5. White Tank

This workshop is open to all photographers of all levels. However, you should have a basic understanding of photo technique including exposure and depth of field. Any camera is acceptable as long as you are familiar with it’s operation.

Joshua Tree is rugged and rocky and we will be doing some light climbing on rocks. Contact me if you have questions.
