The Finger Lakes region offers many photo opportunities for spectacular autumn leaves and waterfalls. Choose a lake, pasture or river, and get ready to explore! Routes are easy to navigate, allowing your attention to be focused on the scenery. You will find yourself captivated by the season’s bountiful colors. While every year is different, late September through October typically offers a good chance for an awesome show, with the first three weeks of October typically being peak season.  Click here to follow the current status of the foliage across the region.

This October we will be photographing an amazing array of autumn color, waterfalls and barns in the New York Finger Lake region. This will be a landscape photography excursion unlike most that we experience in the west. We will visit the iconic Letchworth State Park known as the Grand Canyon of the East. The Genesee River runs through this gorge over three major waterfalls. There are numerous lookouts and trails surrounded by the autumn forests. Stony Brook is also near by.

We will explore and photograph the Finger Lakes including Canandaigua Lake, Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Buttermilk Falls, Watkins Glen, and Taughannock Falls at 215 feet tall. Note that this is also a New York winery region.

We will begin our trip by spending 1/2 day visiting the amazing Eastman Museum in Rochester NY. “The George Eastman Museum is an international treasure. The institution encompasses one of the world’s foremost collections of photography and cinema, including the preeminent collection of photographic and cinematographic technology.

The museum is located on the National Historic Landmark estate of entrepreneur and philanthropist George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and a leader in

the development of motion picture film.”

A optional part two of this class will include visiting and photographing Niagara Falls which is 85 miles east of Rochester, NY. Though touristy, Goat Island provides magnificent close up views of the impressive Horseshoe Falls.  Highly recommended if you have never seen it.

Why does fall foliage turn so red?
